About Giengen an der Brenz and the surrounding area

The former Free Imperial City of Giengen an der Brenz is a quiet and tranquil town with around 19,000 inhabitants. The River Brenz runs through the entire town, providing a pleasant idyllic setting for a cosy rest on its banks. The next largest towns, such as Heidenheim (10 km) and Ulm (30 km), are only a few kilometres away. And Giengen itself also attracts visitors with its cosy alleyways for a stroll and a stop at a traditional inn.

Historic old town and buildings

A stroll through Giengen's old town will take you to some impressive buildings.

Evangelical town church: This landmark of the town is characterised by its two unequal towers and combines architectural styles ranging from Romanesque to Art Nouveau. Particularly noteworthy are the Art Nouveau elements from the 1906 renovation and the original late romantic organ by the Link brothers.

Town Hall: Built between 1667 and 1671, the town hall impresses with its historic architecture and is a central point of the town.

Former granary: This 15th century building bears witness to Giengen's economic history and was once used to store grain.

Town fortifications: Remains of the former town wall are a reminder of the town's medieval past and its protection.

HöhlenErlebnisWelt Giengen-Hürben: Located right next to the Charlottenhöhle cave, this interactive adventure museum offers exciting information about caves and the Ice Age.

Kaltenburg Castle: Located between Hürben and the Burgberg district, this ruin offers an insight into the medieval history of the region.

Discover nature and be active in sports

Charlottenhöhle: With a total length of 587 metres, it is one of the longest show caves in southern Germany. The impressive stalactite formations and unique atmosphere make it a very special experience.

Lonetalhöhlen - UNESCO World Heritage Site: The nearby Lonetal valley is home to three important caves in the history of mankind: Vogelherdhöhle, Hohlenstein-Stadel and Bocksteinhöhle. The oldest known works of art known to mankind were found here - including the famous Lion Man. The caves are part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site ‘Caves and Ice Age Art of the Swabian Jura’ and offer not only archaeological highlights, but also beautiful hiking trails in unspoilt nature.

Jakobswegle: A 4.2 km circular route around the Kagberg, which depicts the route from Giengen to Santiago de Compostela on a scale of 1:1000 over 2.5 km. Ideal for hikers and pilgrims who want to find out more about the Way of St James.

Mountain pool: This outdoor pool on the Schießberg offers recreation from May to September with a swimmer's and non-swimmer's pool, a 60 metre long giant slide and other leisure activities such as beach volleyball and mini golf.

Nature reserves: The area surrounding Giengen is home to several nature reserves that are ideal for hiking and exploring nature. If you like cycling, as a hotel guest you can hire e-bikes and bicycles directly from us.
